Despite the longevity of the global movement, 16 Days of Activism
Against Gender Violence, this will is the first year for San Miguel
de Allende to participate in a community-wide observance. imagina
2009 is a series of arts and activism events from November
25th to December 10th. The aim is to raise awareness on issues related
to violence against women and human rights. A number of local artists
and organizations have come together in this project that includes
a film series, panel discussions, poetry readings, celebrations and
of course, art exhibitions.
Day One begins at 3 pm with a showing of IN THE TIME OF THE BUTTERFLIES,
kicking off the film series coordinated by Trish Snyder. This film about
the Mirabal sisters, provides context for the International Day to End
Violence Against Women and the 16 Days. At 7 pm the same day, a gala
event - a simultaneous opening for several exhibitions - will take place
in the Instituto Allende on November 25th, from 7-9 P.M. This event
features botanas donated by several local restaurants, music and performance.
It is open to the public and is free of charge. The full calendar of
events, venues and times is available in www.imaginajuntos.blogspot.com and also in Atencion San Miguel.
The following day, CASA and Jovenes Adelantes host a Thanksgiving
Dinner at 3 pm, skillfully organized and prepared by master chef Kirsten
West. More info and ticket purchase available at La Conexion or by
emailing cs_villagran@hotmail.com
at CASA.
Leading up to imagina’s events is a peaceful march and rally
on Sunday, November 22 at Benito Juarez Park. Participants are asked
to wear black and purple and are invited to carry placards with messages
of peace and non-violence. Participating organizations include Instituto
Municipal para la Mujer, Hospice San Miguel, Olas de Paz, CENAVI,
Comision de Derechos Humanos Atreve por las Mujeres y Comudaj, and
CASA (Centro para los Adolescentes de San Miguel). Members of JUNTOS
and the rest of the community are invited to participate with these
local organizations.
